As I begin my book project on regulating labor in the global economy, I’ll occasionally refer to some interesting books and articles that I come across. One such book that was recently released is a multi-author collaboration entitled Looking Behind the Label (2015) by the sociologist Tim Bartley, who has written extensively on the relationship between private and public rule making in labor and environmental regulation, as well as Sebastian Koos, Hiram Samel, Gustavo Setrini, and Nik Summers. The authors  take a middle ground position between advocates and skeptics of what some might call political or ethical consumerism. Their term, conscientious consumerism, suggests a more moderate position in which consumer choices informed by the social and environmental processes that lie behind the goods they purchase can be beneficial. But they that such ad hoc choices fall short of  constituting a full blown political movement or ideology. I’m looking forward to reading their case studies of the garment, food, and electronics industries.
